Day 45: Changing it up

By , February 21, 2012 8:43 pm

Well, made it halfway. Attempt 10 saw some success and some failures. But I found out what the problem with P90X is. It’s so damn boring.

I have grown eternally tired of being locked in the cage that is my apartment so as of this second, I’m changing up the game. I’m getting outside. I need to step up the cardio because I really need to get in shape now. I suddenly have deadlines.

So with that, here’s to the end of my latest attempt to conquer P90X. On to running outside and hitting my gym. And after my family cruise in 11 days (don’t think for a second I’m not counting down the days) it’s back to the real workout palace, American Combat Club. No one knows how to work your can into shape more than former boxer Mike Bell.

Seeya Tony. It’s been real. Just not real enthralling. Time for a change.

So you want to get your MBA?

Alexander Renzi

Alexander Renzi

I had a great discussion with an associate of Wharton Ventures today. WVP, as it’s called, is a student-run venture capital fund. Alexander Renzi was my guest today on the Spreecast Tech & Biz Channel . T&B is all about technology and business from those who are living it – and doing a pretty great job.

The Tech & Biz Spreecast highlights stories from top CEOs and founders of great companies. But today, my discussion with Renzi was about school, the Ventures program and much more. Renzi is thisclose to becoming one of these great business minds with a promising future as a CEO of some great company that hasn’t been developed yet. I’m convinced.

He told me what the Wharton MBA program is all about, how the Ventures program works and even some success and failure stories of one of his first start-ups ‘Goji & Me’ – a custom cereal company. Basically, you’d pick the ingredients, create your cereal and they’d ship it to your door. The company grew very quickly only to be shut down by disagreements by the members. There were some great lessons learned that, I’m sure, will help Renzi navigate his future as he grows in the business world.

That’s the story in a nutshell. I’ve embedded the Spreecast below. Feel free to contact me if you have any questions. Also, please follow me on Twitter at @jpbenson for information on upcoming Tech & Biz Spreecasts!

Day 44: Plyometrics

By , February 14, 2012 9:13 pm

Happy Valentine’s Day. And Happy Leg Agony Day. Good workout today. The legs needed a big wake-up call and they definitely got it with Plyo. So happy to be back on the track. It’s still hard a month and a half now, but that’s because I haven’t been 100% in the program. So I can’t complain. But keeping it going is key. It’s not pretty, but it’s getting done. Later!

Day 43: Chest, Shoulders & Triceps

By , February 13, 2012 9:06 pm

Well, now that I got that out of my system, I’m back! Had a great workout today. Most of the workout completed and most of Ab Ripper as well. I had a small window to work out and I got it in. So for that, I’m happy. Back on track and trying to get into shape before my cruise on March 3rd with the family. I’m kinda wishing my 8-pack was in order (yeah, right). But I’ll have to work with what I have and what I’m working on. (: Good workout. Hopefully more to come this week. The workout log doesn’t look pretty, but what I can be proud of – if I pulled this in the past, I would have quit and wanted to start over. I’m going to keep trucking and finish this program if it’s the last thing I do. I’m about 49% done. Good feeling. But man, I’m getting bored with it. /:

Day 42: Kenpo X

By , February 12, 2012 9:04 pm

I said, I’m taking the weekend off! Not really, but I just didn’t get the workout done. No excuse. Red X time. Ouch.

Day 41: Legs & Back

By , February 11, 2012 9:02 pm

Don’t ask. Taking the weekend off. Yes, X time. Sometimes you can’t possibly fit anymore into a day without killing yourself. I’m convinced either I keep myself that busy, or I’m not cut from the fabric of those who can master working out on top of ridiculously long days. Oh well. It may not be 100%, but it’s the next best thing. Haven’t given up yet!

Day 40: Yoga X

By , February 10, 2012 12:52 pm

Good workout today. Stretching is just what I needed. It never fails, if I’m out of the loop for awhile or have a few days off, the body tightens up luck crazy! So this is good to do and do often.

Weekend right around the corner. That’s great news in itself. We have to shoot pictures at work tomorrow. I wish I had a tan, paste face. Have a good one.

A Google is forever…

By , February 10, 2012 12:50 pm

By now you’ve seen it, the privacy link on Google, YouTube, etc. explaining that “this stuff matters”. Did you read it? I have been plowing through it here and there. It’s boring, but I knew it would become a big point of discussion. Because every time I go to YouTube to log in, or head to Google, it pops up. I get it already.

But they’re right: This stuff matters.

Take this little blurb from and article written for CNN by Frida Ghitis of the Miami Herald. She dissected, digested and made sense of all the legalese and sums it up in these sobering little paragraphs:

Google has every e-mail you ever sent or received on Gmail. It has every search you ever made, the contents of every chat you ever had over Google Talk. It holds a record of every telephone conversation you had using Google Voice, it knows every Google Alert you’ve set up. It has your Google Calendar with all content going back as far as you’ve used it, including everything you’ve done every day since then. It knows your contact list with all the information you may have included about yourself and the people you know. It has your Picasa pictures, your news page configuration, indicating what topics you’re most interested in. And so on.

If you ever used Google while logged in to your account to search for a person, a symptom, a medical side effect, a political idea; if you ever gossiped using one of Google’s services, all of this is on Google’s servers. And thanks to the magic of Google’s algorithms, it is easy to sift through the information because Google search works like a charm. Google can even track searches on your computer when you’re not logged in for up to six months.

Maybe you’re from the camp who believes they’ll never have to worry what anyone thinks of their searches or emails because there not interesting or important enough. Perhaps. But can you imagine running for office or getting caught up in a major crime by accident? This stuff could possibly come back to haunt you.

I agree in that this information should only belong to you. But that may not happen for a very long time. Besides, Google is giving you the world for free. What are you giving them? There’s always a tradeoff. But the threat of hackers scares me. When you put all your golden nuggets in one basket…well, there’s a moral there. Just don’t do it is what I’ve learned.

This will continually set up a great debate. Whether the government interferes, or if we even want them too is another debate for another day. But man, it’s fun living in these times, isn’t it!?

As for the privacy statements, yes, they’re annoying. Yes, they’re boring to read. But knowledge is power.

Just Google it.

Day 39: Rest Day

By , February 9, 2012 12:06 pm

Rest day. Hooray. Out on the reporting beat today, so there’s no time!

Day 38: Back and Biceps

By , February 8, 2012 12:03 pm

Another busy day, but another modified workout. Got some good reps in today. I’ve been slacking on the blog a bit lately due to the fact I’m SO busy, but now I’m catching up. Feel the burn! Ouch. Pulled something. Kidding. Later.
